Warning Trends

Tariffs could negatively impact the cleaning equipment and supplies sector

  • The United States imposed a blanket 10.0% tariff on all goods imported from foreign countries, with specific reciprocal rates applying to other trading partners. The United States is a net importer of many products in this sector, which means US buyers will face higher costs for importing cleaning equipment and supplies.
  • According to CleanLink, increases in tariffs are expected to impact the cleaning equipment and supplies industry by increasing the cost of manufacturing products and, thus, the price of products. The tariff increase could also spark supply-chain disruptions, which could further put upward pressure on pricing if goods are in limited supply.
  • Tariffs imposed in 2019 forced cleaning supplies company WAXIE to pass along price increases to buyers when no domestic alternative was available. Tariffs of 25.0% on steel and aluminum are expected to drive up prices for clothes dryers, washing machines, septic tanks, carpet cleaning equipment, vacuum cleaners, floor polishers, and other equipment.
  • China, a major exporter to the United States of many products in the cleaning equipment and supplies industry, faces a base tariff of 30.0%, down from 145.0% following the May 12th agreement, which is expected to drive up costs for US-based suppliers that source inputs from China or buyers that source products from China. Germany, a major exporter of chemicals and cleaning products to the United States, faces a base 10.0% tariff (as of April 9, there is a 90-day pause on the 20.0% reciprocal tariff on German goods), which will raise the cost of imported cleaning supplies and manufacturers' operating costs, putting upward pressure on market prices.
  • Canada and Mexico, major sources for a variety of cleaning equipment and supplies, will now face a 25.0% tariff for exports to the United States, negatively impacting US buyers by raising costs. The newly imposed 25.0% tariff on imported chemicals will make it more difficult for Mexican and Canadian suppliers to compete in the US market, drive up prices, and pressure supply chains.

Vendor & Supply Chain Analysis

Supply chain risk is high due to the risk associated with in-demand cleaning products used by carpet cleaners. As a result, cleaning products are higher prices, and these higher prices get passed on to buyers when they purchase cleaning services.

Market share concentration is low since carpet cleaning services are provided by several small companies, and buyers prioritize vendors who are nearby. As a result, buyers have some leverage to negotiate prices, keep prices low, and switch vendors if necessary.

Vendor risk is moderate since larger firms maintain financial stability while smaller contractors struggle when demand declines. As a result, prices are liable to change as the financial status of firms change, which decreases buyer power.

As a net importer in the carpet cleaning services market, US buyers' procurement strategies may be influenced by cost considerations and international competition, and they will need to carefully evaluate pricing options and potentially seek out more cost-effective solutions. Being a net importer hurts buyer power because higher import pricing gets passed down to buyers in the form of higher service prices.

Procurement Management KPIs for the Carpet Cleaning Services Market

Managing vendor performance throughout the contract period is easier when tracking specific key performance indicators (KPIs). For example, buyers should monitor Customer Retention Rate and Employee Absence Rate. Buyers may experience better performance throughout their contracts if they establish service level agreements (SLAs) based on Damages and other factors.

KPILevel of Importance (1-5)MeasurementsKey Considerations
Customer Retention Rate

Number of customers on long term contracts

Number of customers who exit long term contracts

Customers exiting long-term contracts with a cleaning company are indicators that the vendor provides poor services.

A poor customer retention rate could indicate a vendor maintaining a poor business relationship with a buyer.

Employee Absence Rate

Number of employees

Number of employee sick days

Number of employee holidays

Most vendors providing carpet cleaning services maintain less than ten employees. The absence of just one employee could imply a delay in services.

Buyers should hire services with a low employee absence rate or with many employees.

High employee absence can imply an inconsistent quality of service.
