Warning Trends

Tariffs to negatively impact the distribution and conditioning systems equipment sector

  • The Trump Administration’s reciprocal tariffs, which apply general tariff rate increases to most leading US trade partners, are set to take effect on August 7, after the administration finalized the rates on August 1. These changes will significantly increase the tariff rate on leading distribution and conditioning systems exporting countries, including the European Union (15.0%), Canada (35.0%), China (54.0%), Mexico (25.0%), Japan (15.0%), and South Korea (15.0%).
  • Distribution and conditioning systems equipment manufacturers in the United States will pay more for many foreign components and parts, such as heating and cooling equipment. Major manufacturers that operate in these markets, including Carrier, Daikin, Lennox, and Trane, have a manufacturing presence in Mexico and source components from tariff-impacted countries like China.
  • According to the Heating, Air-Conditioning, & Refrigeration Distributors International (HARDI), over 66.0% of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration products are made in or use components imported from Canada, China, or Mexico. As price increases are passed down the supply chain, buyers will likely see price increases for key distribution and conditioning systems equipment.
  • China is even more prevalent in several distribution and conditioning component markets, raising upstream supply chain risk following these tariffs. For example, according to the International Energy Agency, 95.0% of heat pump compressors were manufactured in China in 2023, and China accounts for half of the global trade in heat pump components.

Cost Analysis - Total Cost of Ownership for Industrial PVC Pipes

Total cost of ownership is Low in the Industrial PVC Pipes market. The average cost of ownership differs depending on the contract but generally includes costs negotiated before the contract begins, costs billed during the contract period and unforeseen costs. For example, unforeseen costs in the form of Restocking may raise the total cost of ownership unexpectedly.

Negotiated Before

Installation

Additional costs for installation and maintenance are variable depending on the scale of the piping system; therefore, these costs are not included in the benchmark price.

Transportation

Buyers will need to consider the cost of shipping when evaluating transportation expenses in the market. When the price of crude oil experiences sharp price increases, the buyer should anticipate higher shipping costs.

Billed During

Spare Parts

Accessories, such as industrial PVC pipe joints and fittings, are manufactured with various shapes and tolerances and are used to connect and protect pipes. Related accessories consist of elbows, coupling fittings, unions, reducers, crosses, caps, and plugs; these products, on average, cost less than 10.0% of the total industrial PVC pipe price.

Maintenance

PVC pipes need little upkeep but may require frequent checks to ensure they work properly. Maintenance charges can include cleaning, inspection, and repairs.

Repairs

Buyers will need to pay to repair PVC due to its susceptibility to damage from external sources, such as corrosion or exposure to excessively high or low temperatures. Repair charges can vary depending on the severity and intricacy of the damage.

Unforeseen

Restocking

As PVC ages over time, it can become brittle or damaged beyond repair, requiring the buyer to pay for replenishment, which adds to the total cost of ownership. Installation size and complexity are two primary factors that will dictate the cost of replenishment.

Vendor & Supply Chain Analysis

Vendor risk is moderate in this market as key buyers of industrial PVC pipes, such as manufacturing firms, contractors, agribusiness firms, and other buyers, have benefited from rising consumer spending levels, which lower the bankruptcy risk for operators in these downstream markets.

The low overall level of market share concentration benefits buyers. The supplier base consists of manufacturers and wholesalers operating on national, regional, or local levels that compete based on price to win buyer business.

Trends in the transportation sector continue to amplify supply chain disruptions; labor disputes in the rail and truck industry are worsening supply chain disruptions, which may temporarily add levels of risk for the vendor of industrial PVC pipes. In addition, volatility in the price of crude oil has also been heavily impacting plastic prices, which have introduced elements of supply chain risk.

The United States is a net importer of PCV (polyvinyl chloride) pipes, meaning it imports more than it exports. This implies a higher presence of foreign competition within the market but indicates that buyers can access a wider variety of international products, which may result in competitive pricing and a broad range of options.
