Instrumented Control Systems Services Global Overview

Definition

Summary

Providers of instrumented control systems services, such as fire and gas monitoring and control, help buyers with new infrastructure, but they also upgrade outdated control systems, evaluate existing safety instrumented systems, conduct risk management assessments, audit processes, develop procedures, and plan capital improvements to collect data for the control and monitoring of operations. Buyers of these services include electrical power companies, manufacturing plants, and oil and gas refineries. Instrumented systems are different from process control systems because they are passive and only activated to respond to set values.

Warning Trends

Russian invasion of Ukraine is putting additional strain on US chip supply

  • Until recently, the United States sourced nearly all of its neon gas (an essential material in the laser imprinting process to produce semiconductors) from Ukrainian and Russian producers. Previous conflicts between the two nations, specifically related to the Crimea conflict in 2014, resulted in a nearly 600.0% increase in the price of neon.
  • The Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade announced in early June that it would be limiting neon gas exports as part of its sanctions against countries it views as unfriendly. This move will add to lead times and prices for neon.
  • Downstream semiconductor manufacturers keep stockpiles of neon gas that have allowed them to continue manufacturing chips, though it is unknown how long these stockpiles will last. Semiconductor manufacturers will likely pay higher prices for neon gas outside Ukraine as global supplies dwindle.

Vendor & Supply Chain Analysis

Market share concentration is low, with the top four suppliers generating less than 30.0% of the market’s revenue. Market fragmentation benefits buyers by encouraging price competition between vendors.

The supply chain risk for instrumented control systems services is low. The risk of supply disruptions from these upstream suppliers is minimal due to the wide availability of these inputs.

Overall, the vendor risk is low due to their historically inelastic demand for market services. The widespread need for instrumented control systems services helps maintain stable demand, which ensures the financial stability of providers and lowers supply chain risk.

The United States is a net importer of gas, liquid, and electricity meters, indicating heightened competition in the market. While competition is increased due to the foreign presence within the market, reliance on imported products increases supply chain risk slightly.
