This report is intended to assist buyers of public address (PA) systems; a PA system is an electronic amplification system comprised of microphones, amplifiers, loudspeakers, and related equipment used to reinforce and distribute a given sound outdoors or within a building or other venue. Audio equipment manufacturers and distributors typically sell public address systems. PA systems are generally used to reproduce speech, while sound reinforcement systems are used for performances or live music. Common buyers include educational institutions, healthcare facilities, and transportation providers.

This Report Includes:

Warning Trends

Tariffs to escalate prices for electronics and computing equipment

  • The Trump administration’s reciprocating tariffs, which will increase the tariff on all products imported from nearly all US trade partners, are set to take effect on August 7 and are likely to drive price increases across a wide range of sectors.
  • The United States is highly reliant on imported electronics, communication equipment, and computing devices, having imported more than $472 billion worth of electronics in 2024, or about half of the total domestic supply. Starting August 7, imports from key computer and electronics producers such as China (54,0%), Japan (15.0%), South Korea (15.0%), Thailand (19.0%), Vietnam (20.0%), and Taiwan (20.0%) will be subject to new tariff rates. Trade deals for many countries are still being negotiated, and these rates are subject to change.
  • For this reason, the US electronics industry is highly exposed to price increases and supply chain disruptions when the tariffs take effect. For example, the cost of iPhones, which are predominantly manufactured in China, could rise by as much as 43.0% in response to tariffs, according to projections by Rosenblatt Securities.
  • Overall, the Yale Budget Lab anticipates tariffs will increase the average cost of computers and electronics by 18.7% in the short term.
  • The tariffs exempt semiconductors, limiting the cost increases for domestic electronics manufacturers, but the lack of domestic electronics assembly capacity means that this exemption will have a limited effect.

China bans exports of rare minerals to the United States

  • On December 4, China announced a ban on all exports of gallium, germanium, graphite, and antimony to the United States, escalating existing trade restrictions on these materials.
  • China is the leading global producer of each of these metals, producing 98.3%, 67.9%, 62.0%, and 48.2%, respectively, of the world’s gallium, germanium, graphite, and antimony supplies, respectively.
  • The United States can still access these resources from other trade partners who make up most of the remaining global supply of the impacted commodities, such as Canada, Japan, and Brazil.
  • However, the loss of supply from China, the leading producer of these materials, will increase prices and supply chain risk in a range of markets that rely on the affected metals, such as the semiconductor, batteries, and solar cell markets.
  • China’s export ban on these materials is in retaliation to expanded US export bans on advanced semiconductor manufacturing equipment and technologies to China announced two days prior. This ongoing trade dispute adds further uncertainty to technology markets, which are often reliant on components and materials exported from China.

Russian invasion of Ukraine is putting additional strain on US chip supply

  • Until recently, the United States sourced nearly all of its neon gas (an essential material in the laser imprinting process to produce semiconductors) from Ukrainian and Russian producers. Previous conflicts between the two nations, specifically related to the Crimea conflict in 2014, resulted in a nearly 600.0% increase in the price of neon.
  • The Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade announced in early June that it would be limiting neon gas exports as part of its sanctions against countries it views as unfriendly. This move will add to lead times and prices for neon.
  • Downstream semiconductor manufacturers keep stockpiles of neon gas that have allowed them to continue manufacturing chips, though it is unknown how long these stockpiles will last. Semiconductor manufacturers will likely pay higher prices for neon gas outside Ukraine as global supplies dwindle.

Cost Analysis - Total Cost of Ownership for Public Address Systems

Total cost of ownership is Medium in the Public Address Systems market. The average cost of ownership differs depending on the contract but generally includes costs negotiated before the contract begins, costs billed during the contract period and unforeseen costs. For example, unforeseen costs in the form of Hidden Fees may raise the total cost of ownership unexpectedly.

Negotiated Before

Transportation

Buyers should inquire before ordering if shipping costs are included in the price; shipping bulky or delicate equipment, such as speakers, amplifiers, and control units, can be expensive. If shipping costs are not accounted for upfront, the overall expense could be higher than anticipated, affecting the project budget.

Installation

Buyers of permanent PA systems must assess what changes need to be made to the infrastructure of the building and determine how much work must be completed to properly install the system. For this reason, buyers of permanent (rather than portable) PA systems have substantially higher total costs.

Billed During

Labor

Once a permanent PA system is installed, buyers must assign employees to maintain the system. This involves training users to properly use the system, and buyers must consider repair and maintenance costs if the PA system stops working or if a wire shorts.

Utilities

Buyers must consider how the public address (PA) system will be powered and evaluate the impact on ongoing energy costs. Energy consumption can vary significantly depending on the system's size, complexity, and usage frequency.

Warranties

If a warranty is not included in the PA system's price, buyers will need to pay extra for it. If they opt for an extended warranty, they should ensure it fully covers the cost of replacement parts.

Unforeseen

Hidden Fees

In some locations, buyers may need permits or comply with specific public address system regulations. These permits and associated fees may not be evident during initial planning but can significantly increase the overall costs.

Vendor & Supply Chain Analysis

Supply chain risk is moderate for vendors in the PA systems market. Vendors depend on materials that are widely available, but semiconductor and plastic markets have been unstable in recent years, contributing to overall supply chain risk.

Average vendor risk has been moderate in recent years due to volatile semiconductor and plastic prices.

Market share concentration is moderate in this market. Smaller vendors typically focus on a few specialized products and sell to wholesalers, and larger vendors generally have a large catalog and may sell directly to downstream buyers.

The United States is a net importer of audio equipment, importing more than it exports. While the availability of imports benefits buyers by promoting price competition, importing public address systems also entails higher shipping costs and longer delivery times, and buyers face risks associated with rising tariff rates, which can offset the benefits of low-cost imports.

Procurement Management KPIs for the Public Address Systems Market

Managing vendor performance throughout the contract period is easier when tracking specific key performance indicators (KPIs). For example, buyers should monitor Average Resolution Time and Defect Density. Buyers may experience better performance throughout their contracts if they establish service level agreements (SLAs) based on Delivery and other factors.

KPI Level of Importance (1-5) Measurements Key Considerations
Average Resolution Time

Total resolution time

Number of resolved tickets

Buyers that use PA systems for important events should select vendors with strong customer service capabilities. Buyers should ask vendors whether they offer maintenance services on weekends.

The average resolution time represents the average amount of time it takes to resolve a support ticket.

Defect Density

Number of units

Number of defective units

The defect density represents the share of defective products a company produces.

Vendors will generally replace defective systems without additional fees. However, inoperable systems can lead to other delays, so buyers should still select vendors with strong quality assurance programs.
