Warning Trends

Tariffs to negatively impact building and construction components and supplies sector

  • The Trump Administration’s reciprocal tariffs, which impose higher tariffs on all products imported from most foreign nations, are set to take effect on August 7, after the rates were finalized on August 1. As a result, most construction material import sources face higher tariffs, including Mexico (25.0%), Canada (35.0%), Turkiye (15.0%), and China (54.0%).
  • According to Realtor.com, about 70.0% of the softwood lumber and drywall gypsum (used for drywall) used in residential construction is imported from Canada and Mexico, respectively. According to the New York Times, drywall prices could rise by 22.0%. Other products like wood utility poles, medium-density fiberboard, particleboard, plywood, wood veneers, and wood pulp will also see higher prices as a result.
  • The Yale Budget Lab estimates that construction inputs like cement could see a 3.5% increase in price with higher tariffs on imports. Turkiye, Canada, and Mexico, which account for over 65.0% of US imports, face tariff rates of 10.0%, 25.0%, and 25.0%, respectively.
  • Specific steel and aluminum tariffs of 50.0% on all US imports are also negatively affecting buyers of building and construction components and supplies like sheet metal, automatic sliding doors, garage doors, ladders, posts and bollards, and more. In 2024, 23.0% of all steel used in the United States was imported from foreign countries such as Canada and Mexico.
  • US manufacturers reliant on imported plastic resins from countries like China will not be impacted by tariffs as key resins, like polyethylene, polypropylene, and PET, will be exempt from the reciprocal tariffs. Other construction components and supplies that are compliant with the United States-Canada-Mexico Agreement will be exempt from tariffs.

Increased tariffs on copper imports take effect

  • On August 1, the Trump administration implemented 50.0% tariffs on imported copper. Chile and Canada will be most impacted by these tariffs, as they account for a combined 87.0% of all copper imports in the United States.
  • However, these tariffs are less sweeping than initially expected, only applying to semi-finished copper products, while excluding high-purity refined copper and copper input materials, such as ore and concentrate. As leading importers, such as Chile and Canada, have both high copper mining and refining capacities, they will likely avoid most of these tariffs by either exporting the copper in its unrefined form or refining the copper before exporting it to the United States
  • These copper tariff exemptions limit the impact on the electronics and electrical equipment sectors because these applications require refined copper due to its optimal conductive properties.
  • Thus, the prices of metal alloys that include copper, consumer products made from copper, tools, plumbing, corrosion-resistant alloys, and construction materials made from copper are forecast to rise by an average of 39.2%, according to the Yale Budget Lab.

Neutral

Inflation climbs above 3.0% for the first time in seven months

  • In January, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) 12-month inflation rate, the most commonly used measure of inflation, rose by 0.1% to 3.0%, the highest it has been since June 2024.
  • This uptick in inflation follows cuts to interest rates which may have added to consumer demand, fueling higher consumer prices.
  • Additionally, the threat of impending tariff hikes has driven preemptive stockpiling by importers, adding to demand and price growth across a range of industries in the United States.
  • While inflation is still low relative to previous years, sustained recent increases in inflation and the potential effects of tariffs, such as the recently implemented 10.0% on all Chinese goods, mean prices are still rising at a faster-than-normal pace.

Cost Analysis - Total Cost of Ownership for Scaffolding Rental

Total cost of ownership is Low in the Scaffolding Rental market. The average cost of ownership differs depending on the contract but generally includes costs negotiated before the contract begins, costs billed during the contract period and unforeseen costs. For example, unforeseen costs in the form of Hidden Fees may raise the total cost of ownership unexpectedly.

Negotiated Before

Transportation

While many rental firms cover initial delivery and pickup fees for scaffolding equipment, buyers may be subject to the high transportation costs associated with the rental of scaffolding equipment from a supplier located in a less accessible area. Thus, the increased transportation costs could outweigh the benefits of seemingly low rates.

Billed During

Additional Fees

To differentiate themselves from their competitors, a growing number of rental firms have been offering various value-added services, including scaffolding erection services. Because the proper erection of the scaffolding equipment by well-trained personnel helps to minimize the risk of equipment damage and prevent financial penalties, buyers should seriously consider this add-on service

Unforeseen

Hidden Fees

Some potential hidden costs include the fees and charges associated with transportation, damage, lost or stolen items, cleanup, and deposits.

Vendor & Supply Chain Analysis

There is moderate average vendor risk in this market, as vendors rely on the availability of raw material for scaffolding supplies. This market is also in mid-maturity, meaning there are many established and well-known players within the market.

The scaffolding equipment rental market is highly competitive, with more than 1,000 firms offering various types of scaffolding products to contractors and other users across the nation, and this market has exhibited a high level of concentration, with the top four players capturing more than 50.0% of market revenue. High concentration means buyers have a restricted selection of suppliers to consider.

The supply chain for scaffolding rental firms carries a high risk of disruption, primarily due to the availability of raw materials for scaffolding materials. The overall high level of supply risk chain is disadvantageous because possible supply disruptions or shortages, such as with iron and steel, could cause a supply shortage that would prompt scaffolding suppliers to raise their prices, thereby exposing higher rental rates.

As a net importer in the scaffolding rental market, US buyers' procurement strategies may be influenced by factors such as cost considerations and international competition and will need to carefully evaluate pricing options and potentially seek out more cost-effective solutions. Being a net importer can restrict buyer power and reduce their ability to dictate terms and conditions in procurement transactions, and will have less control over pricing, quality, and availability of the goods or services they need.
