Warning Trends

Tariffs to negatively impact building and construction components and supplies sector

  • The Trump Administration’s reciprocal tariffs, which impose higher tariffs on all products imported from most foreign nations, are set to take effect on August 7, after the rates were finalized on August 1. As a result, most construction material import sources face higher tariffs, including Mexico (25.0%), Canada (35.0%), Turkiye (15.0%), and China (54.0%).
  • According to Realtor.com, about 70.0% of the softwood lumber and drywall gypsum (used for drywall) used in residential construction is imported from Canada and Mexico, respectively. According to the New York Times, drywall prices could rise by 22.0%. Other products like wood utility poles, medium-density fiberboard, particleboard, plywood, wood veneers, and wood pulp will also see higher prices as a result.
  • The Yale Budget Lab estimates that construction inputs like cement could see a 3.5% increase in price with higher tariffs on imports. Turkiye, Canada, and Mexico, which account for over 65.0% of US imports, face tariff rates of 10.0%, 25.0%, and 25.0%, respectively.
  • Specific steel and aluminum tariffs of 50.0% on all US imports are also negatively affecting buyers of building and construction components and supplies like sheet metal, automatic sliding doors, garage doors, ladders, posts and bollards, and more. In 2024, 23.0% of all steel used in the United States was imported from foreign countries such as Canada and Mexico.
  • US manufacturers reliant on imported plastic resins from countries like China will not be impacted by tariffs as key resins, like polyethylene, polypropylene, and PET, will be exempt from the reciprocal tariffs. Other construction components and supplies that are compliant with the United States-Canada-Mexico Agreement will be exempt from tariffs.

Increased tariffs on copper imports take effect

  • On August 1, the Trump administration implemented 50.0% tariffs on imported copper. Chile and Canada will be most impacted by these tariffs, as they account for a combined 87.0% of all copper imports in the United States.
  • However, these tariffs are less sweeping than initially expected, only applying to semi-finished copper products, while excluding high-purity refined copper and copper input materials, such as ore and concentrate. As leading importers, such as Chile and Canada, have both high copper mining and refining capacities, they will likely avoid most of these tariffs by either exporting the copper in its unrefined form or refining the copper before exporting it to the United States
  • These copper tariff exemptions limit the impact on the electronics and electrical equipment sectors because these applications require refined copper due to its optimal conductive properties.
  • Thus, the prices of metal alloys that include copper, consumer products made from copper, tools, plumbing, corrosion-resistant alloys, and construction materials made from copper are forecast to rise by an average of 39.2%, according to the Yale Budget Lab.

United States announces new tariffs on all imported aluminum

  • In February 2025, the United States announced 25.0% tariffs on all imported aluminum with no exemptions or exceptions. The tariffs took effect on March 12, 2025. On June 4th, these tariffs were increased further to 50%. These tariffs were not impacted by a recent court decision that temporarily suspended duties on certain goods as they were implemented under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act.
  • Previously, countries such as Canada and Mexico, two of the top exporters of aluminum to the United States, had exemptions from tariffs and the rate was only 10.0%. These have now been removed and all imported aluminum, regardless of origin, will be subject to the 50.0% tariff.
  • When tariffs on imported aluminum were implemented in March 2018, aluminum prices rose modestly. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), prices rose 1.2% in the year after the tariffs were introduced. Because this market relies on aluminum as an input, it may be impacted by this policy.

Cost Analysis - Total Cost of Ownership for Automatic Sliding Doors

Total cost of ownership is Medium in the Automatic Sliding Doors market. The average cost of ownership differs depending on the contract but generally includes costs negotiated before the contract begins, costs billed during the contract period and unforeseen costs. For example, unforeseen costs in the form of Downtime may raise the total cost of ownership unexpectedly.

Negotiated Before

Installation

The most significant total cost of ownership cost for buyers is installation, which can vary depending on the buyer’s application and the size and style of the entrance. Installation costs can be substantial, particularly if retrofitting existing structures is necessary.

Billed During

Maintenance

The buyer may require maintenance services for automatic sliding doors. In addition, during retrofitting and replacement projects, maintenance may be required for existing assets to function correctly with new construction.

Inspections

Periodic inspections of automatic sliding doors greatly decrease the risk of additional maintenance costs. Inspections requested by the buyer are billed as separate services.

Repairs

Due to the complexity of automatic sliding doors, sensors, motors, and control systems often malfunction and require repairs that add to the TCO.

Unforeseen

Downtime

If the automatic doors jam or lock, the resulting downtime can result in lost revenues and additional costs for heating or air conditioning if the doors are left open.

Delays

Installation delays can affect business operations and reduce revenues for buyers as they prolong the time until the doors can be operational.

Vendor & Supply Chain Analysis

Bankruptcy risk is moderate for most suppliers, elevating the risk of service disruption somewhat. Many suppliers are very small, local vendors whose bankruptcy risk is higher than the large or global suppliers with more stable profit margins.

The market for automatic sliding doors is fragmented. The market share concentration of the top four suppliers is less than 30.0%, which encourages price competition.

Supply chain risk is high due to suppliers' reliance on volatile inputs like aluminum, glass, and steel, which increases the likelihood of disruptions during the contract.

The United States is a net importer of doors, windows, and door frames, meaning it imports more than it exports. Although imports spur price competition and increase the number of suppliers in the market, which bolsters buyer power, buyers looking to source door products from overseas suppliers will face higher tariff barriers and should be aware of potential supply chain disruptions that could occur, which can offset the benefits.

KPI Level of Importance (1-5) Measurements Key Considerations
Customer Complaints

Number of customer responses

Number of customer complaints

Defect Density

Number of units

Number of defective units

The defect density represents the share of defective products a company produces.

The defect density can be used to determine whether manufacturing, assembly or quality assurance processes require improvement.
