Crude oil prices dip, but natural gas and fuel prices remain volatile in 2025

  • Oil prices have been falling with the introduction of higher tariffs and the predicted decline in global demand. The OPEC+ group of countries also announced they would be unwinding production cuts and increasing their collective output target for May by 411,000 barrels per day.
  • Trade wars, ongoing conflict between Hamas and Israel, and general unrest in the Middle East are causing uncertainty surrounding oil prices, which has led to volatility in prices. In the third week of May 2025, crude oil prices hit $63.67 per barrel, but volatility remains as geopolitical concerns remain.
  • Natural gas prices rallied early in 2025 with colder-than-usual temperatures in the United States and high demand, topping out at $4.68/MMBtu in March. Prices have since fallen with the onset of trade wars and weakening demand projections to $3.64/MMBtu in the third week of May 2025.
  • The national average of gasoline prices has been rising slightly due to refinery maintenance/outages and blending issues, hitting a national average of $3.15 per gallon in the third week of May 2025. However, gasoline futures have been volatile, falling due to fears of oversupply and deepening concerns about weakening demand with tariffs, but rising after trade deals.

Cost Analysis - Total Cost of Ownership for Coring Services

Total cost of ownership is Low in the Coring Services market. The average cost of ownership differs depending on the contract but generally includes costs negotiated before the contract begins, costs billed during the contract period and unforeseen costs. For example, unforeseen costs in the form of Emergencies may raise the total cost of ownership unexpectedly.

Negotiated Before

Pre-evaluation

If pre-evaluation costs are not included in the quoted price, buyers may have to pay for suppliers' staff to travel to the project site and other additional costs associated with the initial evaluation.

Other Fees

Depending on the project location, buyers typically face extensive permitting and regulatory processes that add to the TCO.

Billed During

Insurance

Many buyers invest in warranty and insurance plans, independently or through their market supplier, to hedge against litigation risks and negative publicity.

Travel

Buyers might have to pay for travel costs when suppliers’ staff visit and assess the project sites to determine specific service needs. For buyers looking to reduce their purchase costs, choosing large-scale operators can be beneficial, as large operators can easily secure lower prices from travel agencies.

Unforeseen

Emergencies

Despite the high level of skill required for the job, miscalculations and unforeseeable issues occasionally occur, resulting in accidents and increased costs. Buyers can limit the risks of additional costs by buying insurance and warranties.

Wage Inflation

Due to the skilled labor requirements and sometimes remote project locations, labor shortages could push up wages significantly, so much that buyers could face additional costs.

Vendor & Supply Chain Analysis

Vendors are at low risk of bankruptcy. Moderate profit levels and positive demand trends, especially for large market operators, contribute to less vendor risk, thus benefiting buyers in service stability.

The top four vendors account for a moderate share of the coring services market. The large vendors; which include Halliburton, Baker Hughes, Nov, and Schlumberger; can leverage their size, name, and a wide array of operations to accumulate market share and reduce buyer power.

Suppliers are at high risk of supply chain disruptions, especially those who do not have good relationships with upstream machinery suppliers. Increased volatility in inputs used to produce machinery has contributed to higher risk for buyers.

The United States is a net importer of metal boring machines, indicating that buyers may have greater access to competitive goods with lower prices or unique features. However, depending on foreign suppliers may leave buyers open to supply chain disruptions caused by foreign currency exchange issues.
