Warning Trends
Manufacturing component prices to rise in response to elevated tariffs
- The Trump administration’s reciprocal tariffs, which apply broad tariffs to all imports from most nations, are set to take effect on August 7 after the rates were finalized on August 1.
- However, these tariff increases exempt steel and aluminum products, which already face a flat tariff rate of 50.0% regardless of source country, except for the United Kingdom, as of mid-June.
- The tariffs on steel and aluminum are set to increase domestic prices for these metals by 37.6%, translating to similar price increases for manufacturing components made from these materials, such as springs, non-electric wire and cable, or fasteners.
- Nonmetallic manufacturing components, such as those made from plastic and other materials, are likely to see significant price increases when the reciprocal tariffs go into effect, with the Yale Budget Lab projecting an 11.0% average price increase for plastic and rubber goods.
- As tariff policy continues to evolve, this story will be continuously updated to reflect the impacts.

Vendor & Supply Chain Analysis
High competition and supply chain risk contribute to a high average level of risk associated with market vendors. High risk has translated into inflationary pricing pressures, as well as bankruptcies in recent years.
Market share concentration is low due to the wide variety of products manufactured in this market, combined with the diversity of the buyer base. Small regional companies can maintain a large presence, which increases competition and pushes downward pressure on pricing.
Fluctuating demand for key commodities like steel and crude oil, combined with blanket tariffs that have increased input costs, can cause significant volatility in the prices of machinery, plastic materials, and resin. As a result, suppliers face greater risk and are more likely to pass higher costs on to buyers through increased pricing.
Although the level of regulation is moderate, the pace of regulatory change has been slow during the past three years, indicating fewer changes to industrial processes and thus fewer new costs.
The United States is a net exporter of plastic products, meaning it exports more plastic products than it imports. This fact allows US buyers to have more domestic procurement options and sourcing flexibility, reducing lead times and transportation costs as compared to importing products.
