Membrane Filters Global Overview

Definition

Summary

Membrane filters utilize pressure in order to force air, water, or other fluids through a porous or semipermeable membrane. The pores in membrane filters then separate out particles from a substance. Membrane filters are commonly used to remove contaminants from a liquid or gas in laboratory, healthcare, and industrial settings. Using membrane filters can help lower energy consumption, enhance operational simplicity and reduce the need for additional solvents. Membrane filters are typically sold directly by manufacturers or through wholesalers, and key buyers include pharmaceutical & biopharmaceutical companies, semiconductor manufacturers, food & beverage producers, and municipal water supply companies.

This Report Includes:

  • Semipermeable Membrane Filters
  • Single-Use Membrane Filters
  • Multi-Use Membrane Filters

Not in this Report:

  • Media Filters
  • Nanofiltration Membrane Filters
  • Reverse-Osmosis Membrane Filters

Warning Trends

Tariffs to negatively impact the distribution and conditioning systems equipment sector

  • The Trump Administration’s reciprocal tariffs, which apply general tariff rate increases to most leading US trade partners, are set to take effect on August 7, after the administration finalized the rates on August 1. These changes will significantly increase the tariff rate on leading distribution and conditioning systems exporting countries, including the European Union (15.0%), Canada (35.0%), China (54.0%), Mexico (25.0%), Japan (15.0%), and South Korea (15.0%).
  • Distribution and conditioning systems equipment manufacturers in the United States will pay more for many foreign components and parts, such as heating and cooling equipment. Major manufacturers that operate in these markets, including Carrier, Daikin, Lennox, and Trane, have a manufacturing presence in Mexico and source components from tariff-impacted countries like China.
  • According to the Heating, Air-Conditioning, & Refrigeration Distributors International (HARDI), over 66.0% of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration products are made in or use components imported from Canada, China, or Mexico. As price increases are passed down the supply chain, buyers will likely see price increases for key distribution and conditioning systems equipment.
  • China is even more prevalent in several distribution and conditioning component markets, raising upstream supply chain risk following these tariffs. For example, according to the International Energy Agency, 95.0% of heat pump compressors were manufactured in China in 2023, and China accounts for half of the global trade in heat pump components.

For example, unforeseen costs in the form of Hidden Fees may raise the total cost of ownership unexpectedly.

Negotiated Before

Implementation

Aside from purchasing filters, buyers will also have to implement membrane filtration systems, which can include pretreatment, chemical cleaning and integrity testing.

Billed During

Additional Fees

Additionally with implementation costs, there are extra costs associated with product installation and membrane cleaning services, along with expenses relating to residuals treatment and disposal.

Unforeseen

Hidden Fees

Vendor & Supply Chain Analysis

There is moderate average vendor risk due to the balance of competition from substitutes and how the market is in late growth for its product lifecycle. Despite some fluctuations in the prices of synthetic fibers and ceramics, a high number of upstream suppliers and rising competition from imported goods help sustain the negotiation power of membrane filter suppliers, increasing competition balance and sustaining top tier suppliers.

The membrane filters market has a moderate level of market share concentration, with the top four players together capturing between 30.0% and 50.0% of total market revenue. Market share concentration is projected to rise slightly, hampering buyer power by diminishing supplier options and giving larger suppliers more leverage in price negotiations.

There is a moderate risk of supply chain disruptions for membrane filters, with the greatest risk that suppliers face coming from potential fluctuations in input costs. Considering that purchases make up a substantial portion of supplier revenue, fluctuations in the prices of key raw materials, such as synthetic fibers, rubber, and ceramics, can undermine suppliers’ ability to control their product prices, which then harms buyer power.

As a net exporter in the membrane filters market, US buyers gain better pricing leverage and negotiation opportunities. A surplus of goods gives US buyers more options to choose from, and makes them less dependent on overseas suppliers, thereby, aiding buyer power by diversifying supply chains.
