Packing Tape Global Overview

Definition

Summary

Packing tape is used for sealing packages and is usually made with a polypropylene or polyester backing. It typically uses acrylic or rubber-based adhesives. Packing tape is designed to be stronger than many other tape forms because it must hold together packages and withstand the rigors of transportation. Suppliers include manufacturers and wholesalers. Retailers also provide these products; however, because many buyers purchase them in large quantities, they primarily source them from manufacturers and wholesalers.

Warning Trends

Manufacturing component prices to rise in response to elevated tariffs

  • The Trump administration’s reciprocal tariffs, which apply broad tariffs to all imports from most nations, are set to take effect on August 7 after the rates were finalized on August 1.
  • However, these tariff increases exempt steel and aluminum products, which already face a flat tariff rate of 50.0% regardless of source country, except for the United Kingdom, as of mid-June.
  • The tariffs on steel and aluminum are set to increase domestic prices for these metals by 37.6%, translating to similar price increases for manufacturing components made from these materials, such as springs, non-electric wire and cable, or fasteners.
  • Nonmetallic manufacturing components, such as those made from plastic and other materials, are likely to see significant price increases when the reciprocal tariffs go into effect, with the Yale Budget Lab projecting an 11.0% average price increase for plastic and rubber goods.
  • As tariff policy continues to evolve, this story will be continuously updated to reflect the impacts.

Cost Analysis - Total Cost of Ownership for Packing Tape

Total cost of ownership is Low in the Packing Tape market. The average cost of ownership differs depending on the contract but generally includes costs negotiated before the contract begins, costs billed during the contract period and unforeseen costs.

Negotiated Before

Transportation

Suppliers do not factor shipping costs into their benchmark price; therefore, buyers should expect to pay extra to have their order shipped to their site. Suppliers also commonly impose fuel surcharges to protect their profitability against rising and volatile gas prices.

Billed During

Additional Fees

Depending on the volume of shipments they send or receive monthly or annually, buyers may also need to purchase a case sealer. These machines are loaded with packing tape, provide automatic sealing, and can be adjusted to suit packages of various sizes.

Storage

Buyers should consider the expenses related to storing and managing inventory. This includes warehouse space, inventory management systems, labor costs for handling and organizing the tape, and any additional costs associated with inventory management.

Disposal

Packaging waste generated during packing tape, such as leftover tape rolls or backing materials, may require proper disposal. The costs associated with waste management and disposal should be taken into account.

Vendor & Supply Chain Analysis

Packaging tape suppliers have experienced a recent decline in financial performance due to tariff-related pressures. Notably, 3M Co. reduced its 2025 profit forecast, attributing the adjustment to rising trade tensions, especially between the United States and China.

Large suppliers like 3M and Intertape Polymer Group carve out sizable market portions. A moderate level of market share concentration curtails buyer power by reducing price competition between suppliers.

This market faces elevated risk from supply chain vulnerability stemming from vendors' reliance on plastics, resins, rubber, and chemicals. Additionally, tariff uncertainty has disrupted the packaging supply chain and increased the cost of key raw materials, including plastics, aluminum, and paper; as suppliers adjust their sourcing strategies and consider relocation, the broader market faces higher costs and reduced stability.

The United States is a net importer of packing tape, which suggests significant foreign competition within the market. This could drive prices down due to the variety of sourcing options; however, reliance on foreign sources introduces risks such as longer lead times, increased shipping costs, and potential supply chain disruptions due to geopolitical issues or trade policies.

Procurement Management KPIs for the Packing Tape Market

Managing vendor performance throughout the contract period is easier when tracking specific key performance indicators (KPIs). For example, buyers should monitor Customer Concentration and Defect Density. Buyers may experience better performance throughout their contracts if they establish service level agreements (SLAs) based on Delivery and other factors.

KPI Level of Importance (1-5) Measurements Key Considerations
Customer Concentration

Revenue per customer

Total revenue

The customer concentration represents the amount of revenue associated with a single customer.

This KPI is relevant since most suppliers are small and midsize operators serving local and regional buyers. As such, there is a significant chance that a supplier's revenue is overly concentrated in one or few buyers.

Defect Density

Number of cases sold

Number of cases with reported defects

The defect density represents the share of defective products a company produces.

As packing tape is ultimately used as a means for transporting goods, defective products could lead to lost or damaged goods.

Packing Tape RFP Guidelines

What should my RFP include?

Organizational Overview

Buyers should give an overview of their operations, including industry type (i.e., courier, moving company, and manufacturer), to help prospective vendors understand their general packing tape needs.

Buyers should provide a detailed description of their operational structure, including to whom vendors will report.

Statement Of Need

Buyers should describe their specific tape dimension needs, such as thickness, length, durability, and order volume.

Buyers should list the level of durability they are seeking with their tape, including any environmental factors that could adversely affect it. Material composition affects durability, so this will help narrow down whether they should use rubber—or acrylic-based tape.

Project Budget

Buyers should explicitly state the award amount.

Buyers should describe the desired type of supply contract, including the desired payment terms.
