Summary

Artificial turf, also known as synthetic grass, is engineered to mimic the look and feel of natural grass and is manufactured using only man-made materials. Artificial turf is typically most cost-effective in high-traffic areas or locations where grass does not easily grow. Common applications for artificial turf include athletic fields, sports arenas, golf courses, public areas, residential buildings, and homes. This report encompasses the purchase of artificial turf material and turf installation. Suppliers are sometimes vertically integrated, with turf manufacturers also providing installation services. Key buyers are sports facility owners, educational facility owners, homeowners, golf course operators, and commercial building owners.

This Report Includes:

  • Polypropylene Artificial Turf
  • Polyethylene Artificial Turf
  • Nylon Artificial Turf

Not in this Report:

Warning Trends

Tariffs to negatively impact the building and construction machinery sector

  • The Trump Administration’s reciprocal tariffs, which apply general tariff rate increases to most countries the United States trades with, are set to take effect on August 7, after the administration finalized the national rates on August 1. As a result, leading sources of imported construction machinery face significantly higher tariff rates, including Japan (15.0%), Mexico (25.0%), South Korea (15.0%), the European Union (15.0%), the United Kingdom (10.0%), China (54.0%), and Canada (35.0%).
  • The increase in tariffs on building and construction machinery imported from tariff-impacted countries will add to the price of imports, which are typically passed on to buyers in the form of higher prices. According to The Budget Lab at Yale, the additional tariffs on imports will increase overall prices for machinery and equipment by 13.3%.
  • Additionally, the administration has already implemented 50.0% tariffs on all aluminum and steel imported into the United States, with the sole exception of imports from the United Kingdom. These tariffs will increase input costs even for construction machinery suppliers with domestic manufacturing operations.
  • According to an April 2025 survey from Construction Equipment Magazine, around half of the respondents reported that the higher tariffs will increase operating costs by up to 15.0%, and more than half said they plan to pass those increases along to buyers.
  • As many building and construction machinery brands source parts and components such as steel, engines, and electronics from foreign countries, higher tariff rates will put upward pressure on prices and lead to greater rental rates as manufacturers and dealers pass on costs. In addition, suppliers that source parts from tariff-affected regions may see supply chain disruptions as they seek alternative suppliers to mitigate tariff impacts.

Cost Analysis - Total Cost of Ownership for Artificial Turf Systems

Total cost of ownership is Low in the Artificial Turf Systems market. The average cost of ownership differs depending on the contract but generally includes costs negotiated before the contract begins, costs billed during the contract period and unforeseen costs.

Negotiated Before

Installation

When purchasing artificial turf, there is generally a trade-off between initial installation costs and long-term ownership costs. Buyers that invest in high-quality turf materials and use experienced installers are likely to enjoy a much longer service life than buyers that purchase cheaply made turf and do not use professional installation services.

Billed During

Maintenance

Artificial turf fields last from six to 13 years depending on the quality of installation, annual usage and the amount of maintenance performed. With proper maintenance and average use, a turf surface should last about 10 years.

Additional Fees

Additional costs are minimal when purchasing artificial turf. For large fields, buyers usually must purchase a specialized turf sweeper.

Warranties

Buyers should consider the cost of warranties, which vary based on the length and types of defects covered. The typical warranty length in this market ranges from 5 to 15 years.

Vendor & Supply Chain Analysis

The average vendor in this market operates at moderate risk. While vendors benefit from healthy profit margins and wide range of downstream markets, the oil-based input costs are highly volatile.

Market share concentration in the artificial turf systems market is low and decreasing. The market is highly fragmented because turf installation must be performed on site, which lends itself to the prevalence of local and regional suppliers.

The supply chain associated with artificial turf systems carries a moderate degree of risk. Risk primarily stems from volatile input costs, most notably synthetic materials and plastic materials, which are crucial inputs in the production of artificial turf systems.

The United States is a net importer of nylon turf, meaning it imports more than it exports in nylon turf. The majority of suppliers are small in size and scope, without the ability to branch out into the international market, but those that do benefit from more competitive turf prices.
