Warning Trends
Increased tariffs on copper imports take effect
- On August 1, the Trump administration implemented 50.0% tariffs on imported copper. Chile and Canada will be most impacted by these tariffs, as they account for a combined 87.0% of all copper imports in the United States.
- However, these tariffs are less sweeping than initially expected, only applying to semi-finished copper products, while excluding high-purity refined copper and copper input materials, such as ore and concentrate. As leading importers, such as Chile and Canada, have both high copper mining and refining capacities, they will likely avoid most of these tariffs by either exporting the copper in its unrefined form or refining the copper before exporting it to the United States
- These copper tariff exemptions limit the impact on the electronics and electrical equipment sectors because these applications require refined copper due to its optimal conductive properties.
- Thus, the prices of metal alloys that include copper, consumer products made from copper, tools, plumbing, corrosion-resistant alloys, and construction materials made from copper are forecast to rise by an average of 39.2%, according to the Yale Budget Lab.
Tariffs to escalate prices for electronics and computing equipment
- The Trump administration’s reciprocating tariffs, which will increase the tariff on all products imported from nearly all US trade partners, are set to take effect on August 7 and are likely to drive price increases across a wide range of sectors.
- The United States is highly reliant on imported electronics, communication equipment, and computing devices, having imported more than $472 billion worth of electronics in 2024, or about half of the total domestic supply. Starting August 7, imports from key computer and electronics producers such as China (54,0%), Japan (15.0%), South Korea (15.0%), Thailand (19.0%), Vietnam (20.0%), and Taiwan (20.0%) will be subject to new tariff rates. Trade deals for many countries are still being negotiated, and these rates are subject to change.
- For this reason, the US electronics industry is highly exposed to price increases and supply chain disruptions when the tariffs take effect. For example, the cost of iPhones, which are predominantly manufactured in China, could rise by as much as 43.0% in response to tariffs, according to projections by Rosenblatt Securities.
- Overall, the Yale Budget Lab anticipates tariffs will increase the average cost of computers and electronics by 18.7% in the short term.
- The tariffs exempt semiconductors, limiting the cost increases for domestic electronics manufacturers, but the lack of domestic electronics assembly capacity means that this exemption will have a limited effect.

Vendor & Supply Chain Analysis
There is a low level of market share concentration in this market space, and since the market remains fragmented, low market share concentration is favorable for buyers as suppliers are likely to compete with each other to offer the lowest rates.
There is a medium level of vendor risk present in this market as buyers face favorable demand trends but high competition within the market.
Ongoing supply chain issues have caused fluctuations in the price and supply of raw materials such as copper and plastics. Supply chain risk in the market is moderate as a result.
The United States is a net importer of printed circuit assemblies, meaning it imports more than it exports. This provides buyers access to competitively priced goods; however, it also elevates supply chain risk due to the high reliance on overseas manufacturers.

Procurement Management KPIs for the Bare Printed Circuit Boards Market
Managing vendor performance throughout the contract period is easier when tracking specific key performance indicators (KPIs). For example, buyers should monitor Defect Density and On-Time Delivery (OTD). Buyers may experience better performance throughout their contracts if they establish service level agreements (SLAs) based on Delivery and other factors.
| KPI | Level of Importance (1-5) | Measurements | Key Considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Defect Density |
|
Number of units Number of defective units |
Defect density represents the reliability and quality of manufacturing from a vendor. Defect density can be used to determine if certain types of manufacturing, assembly, or quality assurance (QA) processes need to be revised and improved in some way. |
| On-Time Delivery (OTD) |
|
Number of deliveries Number of on-time deliveries |
The on-time delivery rate should be measured by buyers, especially if they are receiving shipments on a regular bases. On-time delivery is important because if the items are not received on time, then the buyer's operations can be delayed. |
