Crude oil prices dip, but natural gas and fuel prices remain volatile in 2025

  • Oil prices have been falling with the introduction of higher tariffs and the predicted decline in global demand. The OPEC+ group of countries also announced they would be unwinding production cuts and increasing their collective output target for May by 411,000 barrels per day.
  • Trade wars, ongoing conflict between Hamas and Israel, and general unrest in the Middle East are causing uncertainty surrounding oil prices, which has led to volatility in prices. In the third week of May 2025, crude oil prices hit $63.67 per barrel, but volatility remains as geopolitical concerns remain.
  • Natural gas prices rallied early in 2025 with colder-than-usual temperatures in the United States and high demand, topping out at $4.68/MMBtu in March. Prices have since fallen with the onset of trade wars and weakening demand projections to $3.64/MMBtu in the third week of May 2025.
  • The national average of gasoline prices has been rising slightly due to refinery maintenance/outages and blending issues, hitting a national average of $3.15 per gallon in the third week of May 2025. However, gasoline futures have been volatile, falling due to fears of oversupply and deepening concerns about weakening demand with tariffs, but rising after trade deals.

Cost Analysis - Total Cost of Ownership for Corporate Travel Services

Total cost of ownership is High in the Corporate Travel Services market. The average cost of ownership differs depending on the contract but generally includes costs negotiated before the contract begins, costs billed during the contract period and unforeseen costs. For example, unforeseen costs in the form of Cancellations may raise the total cost of ownership unexpectedly.

Negotiated Before

Customization

Corporate travel agents research, arrange, manage, and optimize corporations’ travel needs. As such, customization is typically negotiated before services are rendered.

Billed During

Annual Fees

Travel management companies, whether based online or offline, typically charge a monthly or annual maintenance fee on the buyer’s account; these fees can be based on a percentage or a flat rate.

Insurance

Buyers can compensate for this risk by establishing travel policies within their company, assessing the risk and creating detailed itineraries of each trip. Additionally, buyers can purchase travel insurance for their employees’ trips, which will further add to the total cost of ownership.

Unforeseen

Cancellations

Buyers may be liable for early termination and cancellation fees, which may be a flat rate or a share of the contract’s size. Buyers should pay close attention to cancellation terms and negotiate low fees related to cancellation and equipment returns.

Hidden Fees

Hidden fees associated with corporate travel services can include surcharges, service fees, cancellation, or change fees. These fees can increase the total cost of ownership and should be carefully reviewed and understood to minimize costs.

Vendor & Supply Chain Analysis

Airline providers’ prices depend on a variety of input costs, including the price of jet fuel, which has fallen during the past three years due to the collapse in oil prices. With the price of crude oil forecast to rise, airfare is expected to spike during the next three years, which will negatively impact these upstream providers.

The low rate of regulatory change tends to be beneficial for buyers as regulatory costs are often passed on to the client in the form of higher rates and fees.

High market share concentration in this industry harms buyers as vendors are less likely to compete on price.

The United States is a net importer of computers, meaning it imports more computers than it exports. While lower manufacturing costs abroad drive down prices for imported computers, relying on imports can lead to potential shortages or price increases if there are supply chain disruptions due to geopolitical tensions, trade disputes, or global crises.
