Crude oil prices dip, but natural gas and fuel prices remain volatile in 2025

  • Oil prices have been falling with the introduction of higher tariffs and the predicted decline in global demand. The OPEC+ group of countries also announced they would be unwinding production cuts and increasing their collective output target for May by 411,000 barrels per day.
  • Trade wars, ongoing conflict between Hamas and Israel, and general unrest in the Middle East are causing uncertainty surrounding oil prices, which has led to volatility in prices. In the third week of May 2025, crude oil prices hit $63.67 per barrel, but volatility remains as geopolitical concerns remain.
  • Natural gas prices rallied early in 2025 with colder-than-usual temperatures in the United States and high demand, topping out at $4.68/MMBtu in March. Prices have since fallen with the onset of trade wars and weakening demand projections to $3.64/MMBtu in the third week of May 2025.
  • The national average of gasoline prices has been rising slightly due to refinery maintenance/outages and blending issues, hitting a national average of $3.15 per gallon in the third week of May 2025. However, gasoline futures have been volatile, falling due to fears of oversupply and deepening concerns about weakening demand with tariffs, but rising after trade deals.

Cost Analysis - Total Cost of Ownership for Freight Forwarding Services

Total cost of ownership is Low in the Freight Forwarding Services market. The average cost of ownership differs depending on the contract but generally includes costs negotiated before the contract begins, costs billed during the contract period and unforeseen costs. For example, unforeseen costs in the form of Delays may raise the total cost of ownership unexpectedly.

Negotiated Before

Pre-evaluation

Suppliers typically do not apply hidden charges beyond those specified upfront in the price quote, meaning that much of the total cost of ownership is derived from the time needed for buyers to properly evaluate different vendors. By thoroughly assessing the fleets, on-time delivery rates, and reputations of the carriers a forwarder works with, buyers can help ensure that the total cost of ownership is minimal in this market.

Other Fees

Suppliers in this market are required to adhere to TSA regulations and training. In order to offset these additional costs, suppliers charge a separate fee to buyers outside the benchmark price.

Transportation

When goods are picked up directly from the buyers' warehouses, buyers must pay a pickup charge.

Billed During

Storage

Demurrage fees are applied when a carrier must detain a vehicle or vessel beyond the free time stipulated for loading or unloading. For truck transport, demurrage fees range from about $60.00 to $80.00 per hour.

Handling

Freight forwarders handle documents and paperwork relating to the buyer's bill of lading. These processing fees can vary but generally do not exceed $100.

Unforeseen

Delays

High carrier risk, poorly maintained vehicles or vessels, inadequate fleets, or inefficient scheduling can lead to service disruptions that negatively affect buyers’ supply chains, and add to the total cost of ownership. Because on-time rates and accurate delivery schedules are important to maintain business continuity, lapses in transportation schedules can hurt downstream clients and force forwarders to reschedule additional legs of freight transportation at the last minute.

Vendor & Supply Chain Analysis

The market’s low level of concentration helps buyers as they will enjoy increased leverage during negotiations with smaller suppliers since they compete more intensely on the basis of price.

Profit margins tend to be highest for large and small firms, with midsize firms generating below-average margins, suggesting a moderate overall vendor financial risk.

Moderate supply chain risk negatively impacts buyers by increasing the likelihood of demand shocks or price fluctuations, which can make it difficult for buyers to count on steady service from their freight forwarding supplier.

The United States is a net importer of intermodal containers, demonstrating strong competition from foreign manufacturers within the market. This increased reliance on overseas supply could add to supply chain complexities and potential risks tied to varied trade policies and global economic conditions.
