Crude oil prices dip, but natural gas and fuel prices remain volatile in 2025

  • Oil prices have been falling with the introduction of higher tariffs and the predicted decline in global demand. The OPEC+ group of countries also announced they would be unwinding production cuts and increasing their collective output target for May by 411,000 barrels per day.
  • Trade wars, ongoing conflict between Hamas and Israel, and general unrest in the Middle East are causing uncertainty surrounding oil prices, which has led to volatility in prices. In the third week of May 2025, crude oil prices hit $63.67 per barrel, but volatility remains as geopolitical concerns remain.
  • Natural gas prices rallied early in 2025 with colder-than-usual temperatures in the United States and high demand, topping out at $4.68/MMBtu in March. Prices have since fallen with the onset of trade wars and weakening demand projections to $3.64/MMBtu in the third week of May 2025.
  • The national average of gasoline prices has been rising slightly due to refinery maintenance/outages and blending issues, hitting a national average of $3.15 per gallon in the third week of May 2025. However, gasoline futures have been volatile, falling due to fears of oversupply and deepening concerns about weakening demand with tariffs, but rising after trade deals.

Other Fees

Accessorial fees apply to certain shipments and include charges for customs presentation, hazardous materials, rerouting, late payments, proof of delivery, oversize shipments, storage and a range of other needs. Fees are applied through a range of schemes, including flat rates, per pound or other units, percentage of price or per job.

Unforeseen

Restocking

Some fees are applied because of inadequate packing by the shipper; such charges include repacking or pallet renetting.

Spoilage

Carrier liability is limited to the value of the shipment as stated on the air waybill. In the event of a loss, this type of liability often compensates buyers for less than they would receive for the sale of their shipment.

Vendor & Supply Chain Analysis

Factors such as growing profitability, ample government assistance, and strong brand name recognition are lending themselves to moderate average vendor financial risk.

The market for domestic air cargo transportation is highly concentrated with UPS and FedEx dominating the market, bringing in over half of the market's revenue combined. Delta and American Airlines come in third and fourth place, with most of the remaining carriers holding little market share and operating regionally.

Service continuity and prices vary with the production levels and pricing of key upstream suppliers, which operate with a mostly moderate degree of risk. While upstream suppliers of steel and oil pose a high risk to the market's supply chain, supply chain risk is moderate overall.

The United States is a net exporter of jet fuel due to its robust oil and gas sector, access to natural resources, and petroleum refining capabilities. This limits competition in the market, making buyers more susceptible to price fluctuations from providers.
