Warning Trends
Tariffs could negatively impact the cleaning equipment and supplies sector
- The Trump Administration’s reciprocal tariffs, which apply general tariff rate increases to most leading US trade partners, are set to take effect on August 7, after the administration finalized the rates on August 1.
- According to CleanLink, increases in tariffs are expected to impact the cleaning equipment and supplies industry by raising the cost of manufacturing and, thus, the price of products. The tariff increase could also spark supply-chain disruptions, which could further put upward pressure on pricing if goods are in limited supply.
- China, a major exporter to the United States of many products in the cleaning equipment and supplies industry, faces a base tariff of 54.0%. Likewise, Germany, a major exporter of chemicals and cleaning products, and the rest of the European Union face a 15.0% tariff, which will raise the cost of imported cleaning supplies and manufacturers' operating costs, putting upward pressure on market prices.
- Canada and Mexico, major sources for a variety of cleaning equipment and supplies, will now face 35.0% and 25.0% tariff rates, respectively, for exports to the United States. These tariffs will make it more difficult for Mexican and Canadian suppliers to compete in the US market, driving up domestic prices and pressuring supply chains.

Vendor & Supply Chain Analysis
The average trash bag supplier has a medium level of financial risk due in part to volatile prices for input materials and significant overhead costs. Moderate supplier financial risk limits buyer power because it indicates a higher likelihood that a buyer’s chosen supplier will not be able to fulfill contracts and will become insolvent.
There is a high level of market share concentration in the trash bags market, with the top four companies accounting for more than 45.0% of total market revenue, thus, hurting buyer power. Although there are more than 300,000 suppliers of trash bags, the market has been largely dominated by Procter & Gamble Co (The Clorox Company) and Alcoa Corporation (Reynolds Brand).
The supply chain risk in the trash bags market is high. Much of this risk comes from plastic and resin manufacturers and upstream petroleum refineries, which are responsible for supplying plastic manufacturing plants with the chemical compounds necessary for producing plastic.
As a net importer in the trash bags market, US buyers' procurement strategies may be influenced by factors such as cost considerations and international competition and will need to carefully evaluate pricing options and potentially seek out more cost-effective solutions. Being a net importer can restrict buyer power and reduce their ability to dictate terms and conditions in procurement transactions, and will have less control over pricing, quality, and availability of the goods or services they need.
