Plastic prices rally mid-year in 2024 due to throttled supply and factory shutdowns
- Complications among major plastic and resin producers have restricted the available supply, causing prices to undergo volatility since 2023 and throughout 2024.
- Nova Chemicals, experienced monomer shortages due to outages at its upstream vendor’s plant last year, followed by another force majeure event of which Nova Chemical faced strong declines in output that impacted market supply. Additionally, major plastic producers Formosa, Ineos, Phillips 66, and CP Chem have had similar issues, leading to a decline in market supply.
- Plastic prices have been fluctuating significantly in 2024 as supply constraints in the market pressured resin prices upwards through most of 2024.
- Increased production and softening demand led to a pullback in prices at the start of Q2 in 2024. However, most types of resins have been increasing in price since mid-June due to heightening crude oil prices and falling supply as hurricanes forced some producers, such as Ineos, Formosa, LyondellBasell, Baystar, and Dow, to shut down.
- In October 2024, producers restarted production and resolved issues at facilities, and prices have faced downward pressure. Prices still remain high due to the mid-year rally, and variations in demand have contributed to price fluctuations.

Vendor & Supply Chain Analysis
Market share concentration for this market is low, considering the top four suppliers account for less than 30.0% of market revenue and ProcurementIQ estimates there are over 230 vendors in the market.
Average vendor risk in the market is moderate as vendors are facing high competition and unfavorable environmental trends from consumers. The government will likely require costly measures to be put in place to mitigate environmental damage.
The contract filling service market has a moderate supply chain risk due to the moderate risks facing suppliers of packaging machines and packaging materials such as plastics and metals. The volatility these upstream suppliers exhibit make contract filling service vendors more likely to face supply chain disruptions that could raise their operating expenses.
The United States is a net importer of computers, meaning it imports more computers than it exports. While lower manufacturing costs abroad drive down prices for imported computers, relying on imports can lead to potential shortages or price increases if there are supply chain disruptions due to geopolitical tensions, trade disputes, or global crises.

Procurement Management KPIs for the Contract Filling Services Market
Managing vendor performance throughout the contract period is easier when tracking specific key performance indicators (KPIs). For example, buyers should monitor Cost of Goods Sold and Number of Errors. Buyers may experience better performance throughout their contracts if they establish service level agreements (SLAs) based on Performance Standards and other factors.
| KPI | Level of Importance (1-5) | Measurements | Key Considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost of Goods Sold |
|
Average cost per package Number of price increases per year |
To keep costs down, buyers should closely keep track of cost of material and compare it to other vendors in the market. Vendors that increase prices due to increasing cost of material more than average in the market may not be putting enough effort into cost containment. |
| Number of Errors |
|
Average faulty product rate per shipment Average time to fix error |
Products with blemished or damaged packaging should be replaced by vendors free of charge. Despite not paying for damaged products, buyers will incur costs in the form of delays. A low faulty product rate coupled with a quick turnaround time in sending replacements signals that a vendor is reliable. |
