Global Online File Storage Services Procurement Trends

Discover the top international trends affecting procurement in the global Online File Storage Services market.

Warning Trends

The FBI has warned that Chinese government hackers could disrupt critical infrastructure in the United States in the event of a conflict with China.

  • The FBI announced on January 31 that it had thwarted an attempt by the Chinese government hacking group “Volt Typhoon” to plant malware onto electric power, water treatment and transportation systems in the United States using compromised end-of-life small office/home office (SOHO) routers from Cisco and Netgear. End-of-life devices have been discontinued by manufacturers and no longer receive software patches to eliminate vulnerabilities, which makes these devices attractive targets for hackers.
  • US officials assess that China might disrupt critical US infrastructure to prevent the United States from responding to a Chinese attack on Taiwan. Volt Typhoon has been particularly active in Hawaii and Guam, which house some of the largest US military and naval installations in the Pacific.
  • The FBI announced on September 18 that it had disrupted a botnet from another Chinese government hacking group known as “Flax Typhoon”. Flax Typhoon had infected 260,000 networking devices around the world, including SOHO routers, internet protocol (IP) cameras, digital video recorders (DVRs), and network-attached storage (NAS) devices.n
  • The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) recommends that organizations use its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) Catalog to identify any vulnerabilities in their systems. Furthermore, organizations can subscribe to receive KEV Catalog updates from the agency and may contact the agency for advice.

Positive Trends

Google is acquiring the cloud security startup Wiz.

  • Google announced on March 18 that it would acquire the cybersecurity startup Wiz for $32 billion.
  • Founded in 2020, Wiz is already a leader in cloud security, with $700 million in annual recurring revenue. The company operates at the intersection of two fast-growing markets: cloud computing and cybersecurity.
  • Cloud computing has grown in importance in recent years as firms have moved more workloads onto the cloud to cut costs and increase productivity. However, the shift to cloud computing creates some cybersecurity risks.
  • Google’s acquisition of Wiz will unlock synergies that will improve service quality for Google Cloud and Wiz clients.

The DOJ proposes Google breakup in latest tech antitrust action

  • In August, Google was found guilty of operating as a monopoly and engaging in anti-competitive practices through the operation of its search engine business.
  • In response to this ruling the Department of Justice (DOJ) has stated it will seek a breakup of Google’s business segments, among other similarly harsh penalties. While the actual penalty Google receives must be approved by the judge, the DOJ’s proposed penalties signal a zero-tolerance policy toward tech monopolies.
  • During the last few years, the Federal government has significantly increased its enforcement actions against major technology companies in an effort to contest the high level of market share concentration in this sector.
  • These actions include high-profile anti-trust lawsuits against Amazon, Apple, and Meta, in addition to the case against Google. Consequently, the results of these lawsuits could significantly affect the structure of a wide range of tech markets.

Cost Analysis - Total Cost of Ownership for Online File Storage Services

Total cost of ownership is Medium in the Online File Storage Services market. The average cost of ownership differs depending on the contract but generally includes costs negotiated before the contract begins, costs billed during the contract period and unforeseen costs. For example, unforeseen costs in the form of Downtime may raise the total cost of ownership unexpectedly.

Negotiated Before

Implementation

Regarding operations fees, the primary takeaway is that it is not accessible to move data around. Data operations (e.g., fetching, writing, reading, and tiering), however, are cheaper in higher tiers; for example, according to prices listed from the West US 2 Azure (Microsoft) region, 10,000 write operations under the premium tier cost $0.0175, while 10,000 write operations under the archive tier cost $0.10.

Set Up Fees

Some vendors will charge set-up fees to set up accounts and configure storage settings to meet buyers' requirements.

Customization

Any customized features or adjustments to the product or service may incur additional costs, which should be negotiated before entering agreements.

Billed During

Transfers

Egress refers to data movement outside the vendor’s cloud network. Egress fees are a significant hidden cost of cloud storage services and are typically priced per GB, amounting to anywhere from $0.09 per GB to $0.05 per GB for Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Unforeseen

Downtime

Cloud outage refers to services and file retrieval being temporarily unavailable due to vendor software or hardware errors. Vendors that offer solutions for files with hot standby reduce buyers' total cost of ownership, as these additional services allow buyers to retrieve files and data from other locations.

Buyer Power in Procurement Negotiations

Vendor & Supply Chain Analysis

Because smaller companies cannot compete with market leaders in pricing, the market share of the top four companies has remained intact. High market share concentration means larger buyers crowd smaller players out of the market, reducing competition and increasing market leaders’ negotiation leverage.

Suppliers in the online file storage service market carry a moderate financial risk because high competition forces many suppliers to cut profit to lower prices and win business. Vendors, therefore, have a reasonable chance of becoming insolvent due to lapses in revenue.

The substantial risk from semiconductor manufacturers gives this market a high supply chain risk. Increased supply chain risk is detrimental to buyers because the likelihood of price shocks arising from upstream supply disruptions or downstream demand fluctuations is high.

There is a slow pace of regulatory change in the market for online file storage services. Europe’s General Data Protection Regulations went into effect in 2018; however, this regulation has little impact on online file storage service providers because it does not raise operating costs, thus leaving buyer power intact.

The United States is a net importer of computer storage units, indicating heavy competition from foreign manufacturers in the market. While this provides access to high-quality products, it also implies a degree of vulnerability to supply chain upheavals, particularly while sourcing specialized parts.

Procurement Management KPIs for the Online File Storage Services Market

Managing vendor performance throughout the contract period is easier when tracking specific key performance indicators (KPIs). For example, buyers should monitor Current Ratio (Assets/Liabilities) and Customer Acquisition Cost. Buyers may experience better performance throughout their contracts if they establish service level agreements (SLAs) based on Accessbility and other factors.

KPI Level of Importance (1-5) Measurements Key Considerations
Current Ratio (Assets/Liabilities)

Current assets

Current liabilities

The current ratio represents a company’s liquidity.

The current ratio can be used to determine a company’s ability to utilize its current assets to satisfy its current liabilities.

As online file storage services require significant investment in servers and storage units, it is important that vendors have strong financial standing.

Customer Acquisition Cost

Total marketing costs

Total advertising costs

Number of customers acquired

The customer acquisition cost can be used to determine the efficiency of customer acquisition processes.

A large number of customers required indicates the growing popularity of the vendor's service.

Buyers should determine how vendors ensure they have the capacity to take on additional clients. While customer growth is a reliable metric for determining a vendor's growing popularity, it is important that the level of service and attention to each client's needs is not jeopardized.
