Plastic Pallets Global Overview

Definition

Summary

Pallets provide a stable platform to assist forklifts in the handling of stacked goods. Pallets are also used for assembling, storing, and transporting goods in a load. Plastic pallets are either made from raw or recycled materials and are built to fit a lift truck's forks in order to form a level platform for secure movement. These pallets aid in reducing shipping, handling, and warehousing costs. Moreover, some plastic pallet suppliers may provide pooling (renting) services or pallet management services. Key buyers include distribution and warehouse companies, manufacturers, food and beverage companies, and pharmaceutical companies.

Warning Trends

Reciprocal tariffs drive up packaging product prices

  • The Trump administration’s reciprocal tariffs, which apply general tariff rate increases to all products imported from most nations, are set to take effect on August 7 after the national tariff rates were finalized on August 1. Additionally, 50.0% tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports, except those from the United Kingdom, went into effect in June.
  • These tariffs will have a significant effect across the packaging industry as the United States imports a combined total of more than $127 billion worth of plastic, steel, and lumber annually, the three most common materials in packaging products.
  • Leading packaging product importers include Canada, Mexico, and China, which face tariff rates of 35.0%, 25.0%, and 20.0%, respectively, with the Chinese import tariff rate set to rise to 54.0% in August. However, United States-Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement (USMCA)-originating goods, meaning those produced entirely in Canada or Mexico, are exempt from these tariffs.
  • China accounts for 48.6% of imported plastic products in the United States, making current and upcoming tariffs on Chinese goods particularly impactful for the price of plastic packaging materials, which the Yale Budget Lab projects will rise in price by 11.0%.
  • Likewise, Canada and Mexico provide a combined 51.6% of lumber imports, driving a 6.8% increase in the price of wooden products. Steel and aluminum tariffs are projected to fuel a 39.2% increase in the cost of metal packaging products on average.

Cost Analysis - Total Cost of Ownership for Plastic Pallets

Total cost of ownership is Low in the Plastic Pallets market. The average cost of ownership differs depending on the contract but generally includes costs negotiated before the contract begins, costs billed during the contract period and unforeseen costs. For example, unforeseen costs in the form of Delays may raise the total cost of ownership unexpectedly.

Negotiated Before

Transportation

Shipping costs should be carefully researched because there could be substantial hidden costs associated with shipping. If buyers have their own means of transportation, many vendors allow for pickup.

Billed During

Disposal

Some disposal facilities charge extra fees for bulk pallets, so buyers must also consider the disposal costs in case of a broken pallet.

Repairs

Repairs are generally billed ad hoc; however, some suppliers may include repair and maintenance costs in the contract price. Buyers should thus have a clear understanding of how repair orders are billed.

Training

Buyers may face costs stemming from the need to train operators on proper pallet handling procedures, particularly with oddly shaped or specialized pallet types.

Unforeseen

Delays

Downtime associated with broken pallets can increase the total cost of ownership. Without an adequate supply of pallets, buyers may be forced to operate at less capacity than usual.

Vendor & Supply Chain Analysis

The low level of market share concentration encourages competition among suppliers as they strive to gain a presence in the market. As a result, suppliers offer reduced prices and incentives to attract clients, thereby strengthening buyer power.

Plastic pallets have been gaining traction over pallets made from other materials in the past few years, and there are still many companies entering the market. Thus, the average supplier may not be established enough to protect against bankruptcy, leading to a high level of vendor risk.

Although medium supply chain risk is unlikely to affect the supply of key pallet components, it can impact the price buyers ultimately pay for plastic pallets. In particular, suppliers depend heavily on plastic, resin, and steel manufacturers.

The United States is a net importer of plastic pallets, meaning it imports more plastic pallets than it exports. As a net importer of plastic pallets, the United States heavily relies on foreign markets, underscoring the imperative for US buyers to establish robust international procurement strategies and adapt to trade regulations to ensure a reliable supply chain.

Procurement Management KPIs for the Plastic Pallets Market

Managing vendor performance throughout the contract period is easier when tracking specific key performance indicators (KPIs). For example, buyers should monitor Current Ratio (Assets/Liabilities) and Customer Concentration. Buyers may experience better performance throughout their contracts if they establish service level agreements (SLAs) based on Durability and other factors.

KPI Level of Importance (1-5) Measurements Key Considerations
Current Ratio (Assets/Liabilities)

Current assets

Current liabilities

The current ratio represents a company’s liquidity.

The current ratio is a useful proxy for financial stability, which is useful considering the high level of average vendor risk.

This KPI can help buyers identify risk factors for disruptions or delays in the supply of plastic pallets.

Customer Concentration

Revenue per customer (RPC)

Total revenue

Customer concentration represents the amount of revenue associated with a single customer.

Customer concentration can be used to determine the need to diversify client portfolios.

Because many pallet providers operate regionally, their revenues may be overly concentrated in just one or two buyers.
