Warning Trends

Russian invasion of Ukraine is putting additional strain on US chip supply

  • Until recently, the United States sourced nearly all of its neon gas (an essential material in the laser imprinting process to produce semiconductors) from Ukrainian and Russian producers. Previous conflicts between the two nations, specifically related to the Crimea conflict in 2014, resulted in a nearly 600.0% increase in the price of neon.
  • The Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade announced in early June that it would be limiting neon gas exports as part of its sanctions against countries it views as unfriendly. This move will add to lead times and prices for neon.
  • Downstream semiconductor manufacturers keep stockpiles of neon gas that have allowed them to continue manufacturing chips, though it is unknown how long these stockpiles will last. Semiconductor manufacturers will likely pay higher prices for neon gas outside Ukraine as global supplies dwindle.
  • Micron plans to build largest microchip production complex in US history.

Cost Analysis - Total Cost of Ownership for Photocopier Leasing

Total cost of ownership is Medium in the Photocopier Leasing market. The average cost of ownership differs depending on the contract but generally includes costs negotiated before the contract begins, costs billed during the contract period and unforeseen costs. For example, unforeseen costs in the form of Cancellations may raise the total cost of ownership unexpectedly.

Negotiated Before

Financing

While suppliers often have standard financing terms, high-value clients may generally negotiate some of the terms. Insurance may be provided through the lessor or the lessee’s existing financing or insurance policy. If the existing policy already covers office equipment, the lessee should be sure to pass along documentation to avoid insuring it through the lessor unnecessarily.

Transportation

Before making a lease agreement, shipping costs should be carefully researched because there could be substantial hidden costs at the end of the contract, sometimes amounting to hundreds of dollars. Lessors not looking to purchase the machine at the end of the lease should ensure shipping costs are included in the up-front price.

Billed During

Consumables

The most significant costs associated with photocopier use include shipping, ink or toner, paper, and staples (if the model consists of an automatic stapler). The type of toner a photocopier uses will increase the price, with polymerized toner costing a premium over standard toner.

Repairs

Repairs are generally billed on an ad hoc basis; however, some suppliers may include repair and maintenance costs in the leasing prices. Buyers should thus have a clear understanding on how suppliers bill repair orders under the leasing agreement.

Unforeseen

Cancellations

Cancellation fees for photocopier leases are often steep. Buyers should pay close attention to cancellation terms and negotiate low fees related to cancellation and equipment returns.

Vendor & Supply Chain Analysis

While computer manufacturers have been the most by US-China trade disputes and the global pandemic, supply chains became more resilient to changes in demand and supply through the end of 2020, limiting overall supply chain risk in the market.

Manufacturers maintain the largest market share among all types of suppliers due to their expansive geographic reach and product expertise. Due to the moderate concentration in the market, especially among large manufacturers supplying leasing services, buyers lose some leverage in negotiations.

Profit margins among the top photocopier lessors are lower than the market average due to the lower margins of their other diverse product and service offerings. Companies that solely engage in leasing and related activity typically have much higher margins.

The United States is a net importer of photocopiers, meaning it imports more photocopiers than it exports. US buyers seeking to import photocopiers may need to assess the quality standards and production capacities of international manufacturers, with considerations like the expected lead times for delivery, quality and safety certifications, and the compatibility of the manufactured goods with US standards.
